Albert "Bert" O Donnell's Obituary
MANTUAAlbert J. "Bert" O'Donnell, 69 years of age, passed away Wednesday June 2, 2010 at Briar Hill Rehab Center in Middlefield. Born on October 15, 1940 in Cleveland, Ohio he was the son of the late Joseph and Evelyn (Furka) O'Donnell. A resident of the Mantua-Shalersville area the past 50 years, Bert was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and was a longtime member of the Crestwood Ruritan Club where he was active with the yearly clambake fundraising project. In 2006, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Cleveland after 12 years of service as a truck driver. For many years Bert was an independent truck driver and a member of Local # 407 in Cleveland. He also formerly operated Bert's Sunoco on Broadway Avenue where his slogan " When you deal with Bert , you don't get hurt" was known to many. Bert enjoyed rebuilding Cushman Scooters and antique gas pumps, and his mechanical abilities made him a member in good standing of the Larry & Gang Association. As a local handyman, Bert was always willing to help any area person with his or her repairs, often putting the needs of others ahead of himself. Both family and friends will always remember Bert for his unique sense of humor. On November 7, 1959, he married Ruth C. (Van Dane) O'Donnell who survives at their home. Also surviving are his sons David (Charlene) O'Donnell of Mantua and Kenneth (Connie) O'Donnell of Ravenna; his daughter Michele (Perry) Green of Mantua; his brother Charles (Donna) O'Donnell of Garfield Hts. and sister RoseAnne (Norbert) Sarver of Hudson. Bert is also survived by his grandchildren Paul, Ashley, Brittney, Ryan and Courtney O'Donnell and Stephen, Nathan and Jason Green who will show their love and respect for their grandfather by serving as pallbearers at his funeral service. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua, where prayers will be said Monday at 9:15 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday June 7, 2010 10:00 A.M. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mantua with Rev. Fr. Michael Garvey officiating. Bert will be laid to rest at Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township.
