Charles J. Barnauskas' Obituary
SHALERSVILLE-MANTUA Charles J. Barnauskas, 82 years of age, was called to work beside God on Monday March 3, 2014 at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio after a brief illness. Charles was born in DuBois, Pennsylvania on June 9, 1931, the son of the late Charles J. and Mary (Markalonis) Barnauskas. A graduate of East High School, he had been a Mantua-Shalersville area resident since 1962. Charles had been employed as a millwright at Container Corporation of America, retiring in 1995 after 27 years of service. A U.S. Army Veteran, he had been stationed in Germany, using his love of mechanics to assist his country. A gentleman who was proud of his Lituanian heritage, he will be remembered by all who knew him as being very generous, and a sincere giver of his time and talent to anyone. A member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church for nearly 60 years, he had been very active with the Ox Roast Fair since its inception. He served as President of the Parents' Council of Portage Industries, was a supporter of the local MRDD, including the Special Olympics, Happy Day School and was a member of American Legion Post No. 193, Mantua.Ohio.Charles included Alaska, Australia and Jamaica in his many lifetime travels.He enjoyed supporting his children and grandchildren in all of their activities including boy scouts, sports and recitals. His passion for his "oldie" cars often found him at a swap meet, or the coffee shop with his buddies talking big plans.He had worked on a Model T and multiple DeSotos. On November 23, 1979, he married Columbia (Anderson) Barnauskas who survives at their home. Also surviving are his children William (Peggy) Barnauskas of Clinton, Michigan, Richard (Donna Spinelli) Barnauskas of Ravenna, Kevin (Michelle) Barnauskas and Kenny Monroe both of Mantua, Cathy (Leroy) DeLair of Shalersville, Ruth (Robert) Borway of Tallmadge, Shelly (John) Blackburn of Barnesville, Ohio, Columbia " Bunny" Monroe of Twinsburg, Ohio and Valerie Kuntz of Champion, Ohio. Additional survivors include his brothers Vincent (Eleanor) Barnauskas of Atlanta, Michigan, Robert B. Barnauskas of Euclid, Ohio, 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Charles was preceded in death in 1976 by his first Wife Geraldine R. (Kunish) Barnauskas. Calling hours will be Thursday from 6:00 p.m-8:00 p.m. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua, where prayers will be said Friday at 9:15 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday March 7, 2014, 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mantua with Rev. Michael Garvey officiating. Final resting place will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Shalersville Township, Ohio with Military Honors provided by U.S. Army Honor Guard Team, assisted by members of American Legion Post No. 193. Following the cemetery services, family and friends are invited to a time of fellowship at St. Joseph's Parish Hall.
