Charlotte Jewell's Obituary
Charlotte (née Pochedly) Jewell passed peacefully at age 103 in her home on March 21, 2026. A life-long resident of Freedom Township, she was very proud of her family's contribution to the history of the area. In her own words, "In 1917, Martin and Mary Pochedly and their three children left their Archwood Avenue home in Cleveland to purchase a home and 50 acres on the corner of Stamm and Hankee Road in Freedom Township. Martin's talents and hard work soon had the house livable with running water and a furnace. In 1935, electricity came to the area which meant an electric stove, refrigerator, washing machine, and an indoor bathroom. Five more children were added to the family and all eight graduated from Freedom School. There were three builders, two farmers and a doctor."
Charlotte graduated from Boecker's Business School and worked as a bookkeeper/accountant for many years in Ravenna and Garrettsville. She married Leland Jewell in 1947 and had three children: Sharon Sommers (Rick), Susan Ward (Pat), and Lee Jewell (Gloria Visocan, deceased), seven grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, reading, traveling, volunteering at St. Ambrose Church in many capacities, and her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Leland, her brothers Martin, Matthew, Charles, Albert, James, Carl and their spouses as well as her sister Christine.
A Mass and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
