Cheryl Joan Stankus' Obituary
Cheryl Joan Stankus, (nee Dietz), age 77 of Auburn Twp., passed away peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus Christ, surrounded by her family on Thursday, July 2, 2026. Born April 14, 1949 in Cleveland, Ohio, Cheryl was the cherished daughter of the late Wilfred and Audrey Dietz. Beloved wife of 55 years of Jack Stankus. Loving mother of Jamie Wheeler (Jeffrey) and Jason Stankus (Rachel). Devoted grandmother of Anna, Jackson and Lincoln Wheeler, and Sarah, John, Noah and Steven Stankus. Dear sister of Dennis Dietz, Fred Dietz and the late Janet Roof.
A graduate of Kenston High School, Cheryl continued her education at Kent State before earning her Master's Degree in Education. She carried her love of learning into a meaningful career as a teacher and tutor, serving many local area schools with patience, intelligence, and genuine care for her students. She had a gift for encouraging others and a steady presence that made a lasting difference in the lives of countless children and families. When she suffered a stroke at the age of 52, her life changed in profound ways, and the years that followed brought many medical challenges. She met each day with grace, strength, and quiet determination. She remained smart, supportive, and true to herself, always greeting others with that familiar "Dietzy" smile that reflected her warmth and spirit.
Cheryl's childhood nickname, "Teddy Bear," given to her by her father, captured her personality perfectly. She was gentle, loving, and comforting to those around her, with a sweetness that made people feel at ease in her presence. She loved horses and spoke fondly of her pony named Beauty. These small and tender details reflected the joy and innocence that stayed with her throughout her life.
Her faith and service were also central to who she was. Cheryl served as vice president of Auburn Community Church, where she was active in all aspects of church life and gave generously of her time and talents. She played an important role in the life of the congregation and was instrumental in the creation of the Auburn Community Cookbook, a project that brought people together and preserved the spirit of the community she loved. Her involvement in the church was not simply a title, but a reflection of her commitment to fellowship, service, and shared purpose.
Cheryl lived her entire life in Auburn Township on the fifth-generation family property, a place that held deep meaning for her and connected her to generations before her. There, she and her husband Jack built a family business and a life rooted in hard work, loyalty, and tradition. Cheryl served as vice president of Stankus Heating, contributing her strength, intelligence, and steady leadership to the business. She took great pride in the life she and Jack created together and in the enduring ties to the land and community that shaped her story.
Those who knew Cheryl will remember her as a woman of remarkable character, quiet courage, and unwavering devotion. She faced hardship with dignity, loved deeply, and gave freely of herself in every part of her life. She will be deeply missed.
