David William Sargent's Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of David William Sargent, age 71, who passed away peacefully at his home on July 6, 2026. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 3, 1955, David was the son of the late Howard Sargent and Patricia (Sabine) Sargent.
A longtime resident of the Shalersville area since 1961 and a graduate of Crestwood High School in 1973, David lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, quiet faith, and a deep appreciation for the simple things that brought him joy. David's love of trucks, heavy equipment, and machinery began at a young age while spending time around Solon Sand and Gravel, Inc. That early fascination grew into a lifelong passion and career. He started by hauling sand and gravel locally before spending many years transporting heavy equipment across the country. He eventually retired on a Cleveland-to-Indianapolis mail route, a job that suited his love of the open road.
Along the way, he collected countless stories, and whether he was recounting an adventure from his travels or sharing one of his trademark one-liners, David had a gift for making people laugh. His quick wit, warm smile, and practical wisdom left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Though he was known for his sense of humor, those closest to him knew David as a man of quiet strength and steady character.
A faithful Christian, David's relationship with God was woven throughout his life. His faith was not defined by grand gestures but by the way he lived each day: with humility, kindness, generosity, and compassion for others. He was the kind of person who would lend a hand without being asked, offer thoughtful advice when it was needed, and stand by the people he loved through every season of life.
After retirement, David continued to enjoy life's adventures with his companion, Lisa Campbell. Together they attended swap meets, explored back roads, and sought out the best diners and cafés for a hearty breakfast and good conversation. When he wasn't traveling, he could often be found in the barn tinkering with his beloved classic cars while listening to Hamilton's baseball broadcasts. An avid reader throughout his life, it was rare to find David without a book or magazine nearby and a cup of tea within reach. He enjoyed learning, loved a good game of Scrabble, and appreciated the quiet moments as much as the busy ones.
Above all else, David's greatest joy was his family. He treasured every opportunity to spend time with his children and grandchildren, whether attending sporting events, school programs, family gatherings, or simply enjoying a visit together. Family was the center of his world, and he took great pride in the people they had become. Known throughout his life as David, Dave, D.W., Snake Eyes, Sarge and most affectionately, Papa Dave, he embraced every role with love, humor, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to those he held dear.
David is survived by his four children, Jason Sargent, Jen (Keith) Yonally, Sarah (Dan) Evans, and Jessica (Ron) Guarnera, and their mother, Mary Jo Stoneberg. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Rihana, Jason Jr., Jocelyn, Zack, Marissa, Alexis, Rebecca, Sabrina, Danny Jr., Kyle, and Gabriella. He is further survived by his loving sisters, Doris Leister, Barb Fisher, Martha Halemba, and Carol Golden; many cherished nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins, extended family members, and friends whose lives were touched by his kindness and humor.
A gentle giant in every sense of the phrase, David will be remembered for his generous heart, quiet strength, unwavering faith, love of family, and the laughter he brought to those around him. His life was a testament to hard work, perseverance, kindness, and grace. While his family mourns his passing, they find comfort in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ and in knowing that David has been welcomed into the presence of the Lord he faithfully served.
A celebration of David's life will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the Shalersville Town Hall at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Crestwood 4C's Food Cupboard, P.O. Box 227, Mantua, Ohio 44255. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
