Donald E. Altiere's Obituary
WINDHAM Donald E. Altiere, 67 years of age, passed away unexpectedly Monday October 24, 2011 at his residence. Born on August 1, 1944 in Elkins, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Thomas and Evelyn (Leake) Altiere. Donnie moved to Windham in 1953, and in 1969 he purchased Ellis Bros. Gas & Service Station which became D&A Oil which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2009. During his years in operation, he became known as a businessman who not only treated customers with quality service, but as a person who would always be willing to help in whatever way needed and whenever called upon with his station open 7 days a week. Following his retirement in 2009, Donnie became a valued staff member of the Green Family Funeral Home in Mantua where he continued his desire to help others in their time of need, always with his warm smile and firm handshake. Service to his community included membership in the Windham Lions Club, serving in all leadership roles, cooking at the club's breakfasts and fundraising events. D& A Oil was the sponsor of both Boys baseball teams and Girls summer softball teams, and his boy's baseball teams became well known as being State Champions of the Ohio State Hot Stove League on numerous occasions. As a bus driver for the Mohawk Baton & Drum Corps, he again supported his children and community for several years. Donnie served his country in the U.S. Army and was a longtime member of the American Legion Post of Windham, presently acting as Treasurer. In addition, he was an active member of the Windham United Methodist Church and a supporter of the Brick-By-Brick Windham High School Scholarship Program. As a Windham Township Trustee he again gave to his community of time and knowledge, serving in various capacities. He was a member of the fire board showing his concern for the safety of the entire Windham area. On February 22, 1969, he married his devoted wife Carla J. (Geiger) Altiere who survives at their home. Also surviving are his loving children Brian (Amanda) Altiere of Westerville, Ohio, Marsha (Matt) Griswold of Cuyahoga Falls, his cherished grandchildren Owen and Luisa, dear siblings Robert (Terrie) Altiere and Richard (Barbara) Altiere both of Windham, Michael Altiere of Charlotte, North Carolina, Mary (Jim) Basso of Cortland and Linda (Dan) Wilke of Mantua, sister-in-law Jan Blake of Windham, brother-in-law Bill (Joann) Geiger of Tampa, Florida and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and loving friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Jim Altiere. Calling hours will be Thursday, October 27, 2011 from 5:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua, where his funeral service will be held Friday October 28, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Gerald Kalb officiating. Full military honors will be observed with an Honor Guard Team of the U.S. Army assisted by members of the American Legion. His final resting place will be held at Windham Township Cemetery at a private family interment.
