Donald R. Gerres' Obituary
RAVENNADonald R. Gerres, 86 years of age, passed away Thursday October 17, 2013 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio. Born in Fredonia, New York on February 18, 1927, he was the son of the late Michael and Lula Bell (Brunson) Gerres. A U.S. Army veteran, he served his country during World War II. Don graduated with a BA in education from Fredonia State University in 1952. Don taught 33 years in the Cassadaga Valley School District, beginning his career in a one room school house. He had a great influence on the education of many children who would often greet him I his later years with comments that he was their best and favorite teacher. Don was a lifelong member of the Methodist church, serving in the choir, and the children's church. He was an accomplished fisherman, mentoring others on the secrets of catching Lake Erie walleye, perch and bass. After Don's retirement he moved to Bemus Point, New York in 1985 where he lived until 2008. His early retirement years were spent traveling the United States and fishing. Don's early morning chats with the " guys" at the local restaurant was a major pastime. The fishing stories and the good natured ribbing that took place were a major source of his daily enjoyment. Don spent time attending religious services, concerts and events at the Chautauqua Institution in the summers throughout his entire life. He appreciated good music, played the piano, and loved the old hymns. In 2008, Don moved to Ravenna, Ohio to be close to his niece and family, and began attending Parkside Church. Survivors include his niece Claudia Kennedy of Mantua, Ohio and nephews Robert (June) Strader and Vaughn Strader, both of Fredonia, New York. He was preceded in death by his sister Gertrude Strader in 1986. No calling hours.Don is being laid to rest at Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township, Ohio with a private family service Sunday October 27, 2013, 1:15 P.M. Arrangements are by the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua.
