Dorothy LeWave Cogley's Obituary
WINDHAMDorothy LaWave Cogley, 89 years of age, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday June 5, 2013 with her loving family at her side. She was at peace with meeting her Lord and Savior. Mrs. Cogley was born on December 28, 1924 in Dayton, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Washington Miles and Venice Irene (Bowser) Schrecengost. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Windham, where she was very active with the women's group and church activities for many years. LaWave retired from Windham Schools, was a Volunteer at Robinson Memorial Hospital, Election Precinct worker, Charter member of Dirt Daubers of Windham and the Windham Garden Club. She loved helping friends and family, gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking and was famous for her cinnamon rolls.LaWave loved spending time with her husband, Laird, with just the simple pleasure of watching the miracle of life around them. Sitting on the back porch, walks or rides in the woods, visiting the cabin her husband built for them, sharing tomato soup and grilled cheese cooked on the old stove, just to take the chill off a majestic late fall day were also very special moments in their life together. She enjoyed watching birds and blooms from the yard and home windows in her curio cabinet. Most of all LaWave loved "family". From sons, daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren to neighbors, and friends, all were welcome and she would always say " stop again, you know where we live" and many did just that. She was the perfect hostess with old world world values and was always providing coffee, tea, sandwiches, "chippies", or her famous baked goods. She came from a family of nine children who were taught family values, work ethics, cooking, baking, sewing, gardening and farm life, everything you needed to know to make it in life. She traveled some with her husband after they were married when he was in the Army Air Corp. Later in life they traveled in the USA. As a cafeteria worker at Windham Schools, every child knew her as "Grammy". People seemed to know when she baked; they pulled in the driveway to pick up a cinnamon roll. Some asked for a cinnamon roll at the election polls when she worked. Children next door would knock on her back door and ask: "Mrs. Cogley, do you have any "Dookies"-which she gladly gave. The church or friends and family never went without fresh flowers as long as her flower beds were in bloom. She may even show up anytime of the year at someone's doorstep with a get well or happy birthday flower. On June 27, 1942 in Pennsylvania, she married Laird Cogley, the love of her life, and high school sweetheart. Many people have commented how LaWave and Laird would walk holding hands.LaWave is survived by her loving Laird at their residence, as well as four children who will miss her dearly. Larry (Cheryl) Cogley of Akron, Nancy Beckner of Windham, Tom Cogley of Bonita Springs, Florida and Connie (Jim Craven) Barstow of Garrettsville. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Kerry Poling, Lee (Susan) Beckner, Sean (Renee Doering) Beckner, Molly (Matt) Weems and Lacey Barstow, great-grandchildren, Corey Moore, Megan Palmer, Jacob Beckner, Ellie Beckner, Hannah Weems, Angelina Weems, Myra Beckner and Lilliana Weems. Her sister Ruby Clever of Virginia and brother Miles Schrecengost of Pennsylvania also survive. Five sisters and one brother preceded her in death. No calling hours. LaWave will be laid to rest at a graveside funeral service at Windham Township Cemetery on Saturday June 8, 2013 at 12:30 P.M. with Rev. Chad Delaney officiating. Friends and family are invited following the cemetery services to join together at the Brick Chapel in Windham for a luncheon and to share memories of her life. It was LaWave's request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Windham Congregational UCC. 9029 N. Main Street, P.O.Box 402, Windham, Ohio 44288."Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full. I savored much. Good kids, good times, a loved one's touch." Arrangements are by the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua.
