Eleanor H. Ickeringill's Obituary
MANTUAGraveside funeral services will be held Thursday May 13, 2010 2;30 P.M. at Hillside Cemetery, Mantua Village for Eleanor Rose Hammel Ickeringill, who died November 18, 2009 at Laurel Lake Retirement Community in Hudson, Ohio, where she had been a resident since 1996. Eleanor was born on April 9, 1914 in the Brick Tavern House in Mantua Township, the daughter of the late Frank and Sara (Turner) Hammel, Sr. She received very good grades throughout her school years and was one of 25 graduates of Mantua Village High School in 1931. She attended Hiram Collage for one year before transferring to the Cleveland City Hospital School of Nursing (now Metro-Health) where she became a registered nurse. Florence Nightingale was one of her idols, and she carried a small framed picture card of her along her life journey, which included employment at hospitals in Detroit and Frederick, Maryland. She also shared her love of nursing with students at Simmons College in Boston; Columbia Teachers College in New York City, and Salem City School of Nursing in Salem, Ohio. In 1941, Eleanor applied for the American Red Cross Nursing Service, First Reserve. She was turned down for this front line duty due to her vision, but was enrolled under Home Defense. She shared her love of travel with her husband, John Alfred Ickeringill, whom she married on May 20, 1945. Throughout their marriage they lived in Columbus, Ravenna and Mantua. She was also known as the family historian, keeping track of the activities of her family members until the time of her death and collecting and preserving wedding announcements and obituaries of friends and family members across the country. Eleanor also was a member of Grand Chapter Ohio Order of the Eastern Star. Eleanor worked for the State Liquor Department and State Medical Board as a clerk typist from 1960 to 1970. She resigned in 1970 to take care of her father, " Grandpa " Frank Hammel, Sr. Following his death in 1973, she and John moved to 709 Maple Street, Ravenna. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband on January 5, 1995, and her brother Frank Hammel, Jr. She is remembered fondly by nieces Robin (Ted ) Green of Orlando, Florida and Ruth Ann Harr of Streetsboro; nephews Roger (Linda ) Hammel of Mantua and Russell (Sally ) Hammel of Garrettsville; several great and great-great nephews and nieces; and dear friends. The Rev. Kris Patt of the United Methodist Church in Garrettsville will officiate at her services.
