Elma Pochedly's Obituary
KENT-HIRAM Elma Pochedly ( nee Puranen) 94 years of age, passed away Friday, August 1, 2014 at her home, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Pochedly was born in 1920 in Lordstown, the youngest of nine children. Her parents were born in Finland and the family enjoyed many of the Finish traditions. She married Matt Pochedly in 1942 in Warren, Ohio. For many decades, they successfully operated their farm in Hiram, Ohio where they raised their four children: Vicki (Phil) Hollendoner, Sandy Graham, Patty (Jay) Falls, all of Kent, and Matthew ( Sandy Calloway ) of Freedom. As a high school student, Elma played basketball and softball, and starred in school plays. At the age of 40 she took up golf and scored a hole-in-one on her first round. She enjoyed competing in league play at Sugarbush Golf Club for many years, but never attained that elusive second hole-in-one. She never lost her enjoyment of following sports on TV, especially the PGA and the Cleveland Browns. Mrs. Pochedly was well-known in her circle of friends and family as an excellent cook and took pride in her home and gardens. She loved to host large gatherings for holidays and family celebrations and all agreed that she excelled at it. Her love, kindness, and generosity were much appreciated by her family. She will be missed by her four children, seven grandchildren: Amy ( Dan) Fagan of Hudson; Ann ( Phil) Falhauber of Avon; Joe ( Katie ) Hollendoner of Bel Air, MD; James ( Kathy ) Burk of Seattle, WA; Ashley ( Dustin ) Carlton of Streetsboro; Emily Pochedly of Mantua; Charles Pochedly of Cincinnati; and nine great-grandchildren: Parker Hollendoner, Sarah and Lauren Falhauber, Ella and Caroline Fagan, Athena and Cleo Burk, Ali Carlton, and Evan Stipanovich. She was preceded in death by her husband Matthew Stephen Pochedly, and son-in-law, Jeff Graham. At her request, there will be no calling hours. Cremation has taken place. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Elma may be made to The Portage County Library or The Kevin Coleman Foundation. The family would like to thank Dr. Hugh O'Neil, the Hospice of RMH nurses and staff, and especially Cindy for their excellent care and support. Arrangements are by the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua.
