KENTGladys Maxwell, 85 years of Kent, passed away Monday June 7, 2010 at her residence. Mrs. Maxwell was born in Alliance, Ohio on October 6, 1924 the daughter of the late Humphrey Owen and Blodwen (Jones) Jones. A graduate of Alliance High School, she began her nursing career as a candy striper at Alliance City Hospital. Subsequently, as part of the World War II effort, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corps and began her training at Aultman Hospital in Canton. World War II ended before she graduated, so upon graduation she joined the staff of Aultman Hospital where she became head nurse of a Polio ward. At the height of the polio epidemic, she went to Knoxville, Tennessee to assist with the large number of patients there, following which she worked at University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. After the polio vaccine was invented and the polio crisis subsided, she transferred to Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and became head nurse of Seller's East Wing, whose patients were victims of polio and required iron lungs or other breathing equipment. David (Jennifer) of Kent, Thomas O. of Maryland and Mary E. (James) Schrock of Dublin, Ohio. She is also survived by a sister Olive L.
