Herbert " Speed" Dunkerton's Obituary
MANTUA Herbert Edgar "Speed" Dunkerton, 88 years of age of Mantua, passed away Sunday March 25, 2012 at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky, Ohio. Born August 17, 1923 in Mantua, Ohio, he was the son of the late Fred and Myrtle (Warren) Dunkerton. A lifetime resident of Portage County, Herbert worked as a bus mechanic for the Crestwood School System in Mantua for 30 years. Herbert enjoyed repairing and painting "old cars and trucks". Herbert's hobbies included woodworking, gardening and watching his favorite TV shows, and will be remembered as a man who loved animals, especially dogs. On October 3, 1953, he married Florence A. (Galer) Dunkerton of Wickliffe, Ohio, and they were blessed with 54 years of marriage and two children. Herbert was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving overseas in Europe. He was a devoted husband and father, and a friend to all. Herbert was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was preceded in death by his wife Florence on November 19, 2007, and his sisters Ardith Haylett and Helen Gilbert. Survivors include his son Michael (Andrea) Dunkerton of Kent, his daughter Susan (Jeff) Hallock of Windham and his granddaughter Kylee (Dan) Miklich of Chagrin Falls. No calling hours will be held. A graveside funeral service for Herbert will be held Friday March 30, 2012 11:00 at Hillside Cemetery in Mantua Village with Rev. Chad Delaney officiating. Herbert will then receive full military honors by a. U.S. Army Honor Guard Team assisted by members of American Legion Post No. 193. In lieu of flowers, donations in Herbert's memory are suggested to the Ohio Veterans Home Resident Benefit Fund (OVH-RBF), Attention: Treasury, 3416 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Earmark the check or insert note "in memory of." Arrangements are by the Green family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua.
