John W. Finnerty's Obituary
MANTUAJohn W. Finnerty, 80 years of age, passed away Monday February 20, 2012 at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Hts., Ohio. Born on October 23, 1931, he was the son of the late Charles and Iva (Westmiller) Finnerty. A resident of the Mantua-Shalersville areas since 1984, he had been employed as a Yard Master at Conrail, retiring after 31 years of service. Mr. Finnerty served his country during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Air Force in the 1st Bombardment Squadron. A member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mantua, he also held memberships in the Knights of Columbus Council No. 3766 where he was a former Grand Knight and in the Fr. Cassidy Assembly 4th Degree. He also served his community as a member of the Shalersville Township Board of Zoning Appeals. John enjoyed gardening in his leisure time, and was known as "Mr. Fixit" by family and friends as he had the ability to fix anything that was broken. On August 5, 1984, he married Elaine E. (Avalon) Finnerty who survives at their home. Also surviving are his children Hugh (Diane) Finnerty of Chardon, Matthew (Tina) Finnerty of Novelty, Hollie O'Toole of Newbury, Laurie (Ron) White of Chardon, his step-daughter Sharon (John) Stanonis of Auburn Township, his siblings Gary (Nola) Ream and Jim (Brenda) Finnerty both of Pennsylvania and Evelina Ball of Florida and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death in 2009 by his step-son Michael Wolf. Calling hours will be Thursday from 5:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua, where prayers will be said Friday at 9:15 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday February 24, 2012 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Fr. Michael Garvey officiating. John will then be laid to rest at Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township where military honors will be provided by a U.S. Air Force Honor Guard Team, assisted by members of American Legion Post No. 193.
