John Timothy Sawford Andrews' Obituary
HIRAM John Timothy Sawford Andrews was born on March 20, 1938, in Oxford, England, son of the late Philip W.S. and Mary Margaret (Hawes) Andrews. John attended the Dragon School, Oxford, England, served his country in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy, and went on to New College, Oxford, where he graduated in 1962 with a degree in Natural Science-Chemistry. He earned his MS and PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1969. John taught at Kent State University, and worked in the Liquid Crystal Institute. He went on to serve as Professor of Chemistry at Hiram College for 35 years until his retirement. While on the faculty, he was honored by being invited into the Hiram College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Professor Andrews found great pride in knowing that many of his students have taken up careers worldwide based upon his time spent with them, both in and out of the classroom. A champion of quality education, Professor Andrews felt it was never about himself, it was always about the students. Following his retirement, John had time to pursue a lifelong love of trains. It began when, as a boy, he saw his grandfather at work as Freight Master of Southampton Docks. He went from collecting vintage Lionel model trains to starting a second career as a conductor for the Ashtabula Carson & Jefferson Railroad. He was also a volunteer Trainman for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. It was there that new friendships were made which remain today. Railroading was only one of his many interests during a life that spanned 77 years. John enjoyed flying and sailing with his dear friend the late Pete Bowman, with whom he sailed the Great Lakes. John was an avid reader, a music aficionado, an accomplished photographer and videographer, an amateur astronomer, and was a keen observer of politics. He also loved to travel. John is survived by his devoted wife Susan K. (Payn) McGill, joyfully married December 7, 1996. He is also survived by his beloved daughter Sarah Sacipriya (Krzystof) Sibilla, of Baldwin City, Kansas, his dear brother Gregory (Anne) Andrews of Oxford, England, loving grandchildren Jahnava Mary Sibilla and Gopal Joseph Sibilla, his dear cousin Elizabeth Hawes of Southampton, England, and other loving family members. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, October 3, 2015, 10:00 A.M. at the Kennedy Center of Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio. Reverend Dixon Slingerland will be officiating. A reception will take place immediately following the service. All family and friends are invited to attend. Memorial contributions may be sent to The John T.S. Andrews Fund c/o Hiram College Development Office P.O.Box 67 Hiram, Ohio 44234. Arrangements are by the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua.
