Joseph Humphrey Chadbourne's Obituary
Joseph Humphrey Chadbourne, 14th. 80 years of age, of Chagrin Falls, born in Boston Massachusetts, May 15, 1931, passed away on May 3, 2012. He was a graduate of Phillips Academy Andover, Yale University, and the University of Connecticut at Storrs. He served in Korea in the U. S. Army in the counterintelligence corps. Joe's abiding commitment to education about the environment made him a pioneer in environmental education. He began watershed studies with students and teachers in the late 60s at University School, in Cleveland, where he taught biology. He later continued watershed studies as headmaster at Tilton School, in Tilton New Hampshire, from 1969 to 1971, and then founded the Institute for Environmental Education in Cleveland in 1971. Projects included the Watershed Heritage Program, Cleveland's Teacher Internship Program, and co-authorship of numerous books and studies. He and his wife, Mary worked together at the Institute from 1976 until 1993, when they opened their own environmental education and consulting business, Chadbourne & Chadbourne, Inc. He was also a fellow at the Institute for Institutional Leadership in Washington, D. C. An avid hammer thrower, he qualified for the Olympic trials in 1952, and later established numerous national records in the hammer throw in masters track and field competition with the Over the Jill Track Club, Cleveland. He is survived by his wife, Mary M. Chadbourne, Chagrin Falls, his sisters, Joan Chadbourne and Nancy Maze; his children, Caitlin Roberts, Greensburg, PA; Gay Canepa, Hingham, MA; June Warren, Cape Coral, FL; and Scott Chadbourne, Houston, TX; his grandchildren, Brett Canepa, George Mladsi, Jack Chadbourne, Josh Chadbourne, and Lauren Canepa; and great grandchildren, Tara and Mia Mladsi; and numerous cousins, including Coleman Holt, Hamilton Holt, John Holt, Robert Osborne, and Elsa Rosenthal; many nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law Terence McConville. A memorial celebration of his life will be held at a date to be announced. In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes scattered.
