Luther E. "Ted" Gertz's Obituary
MANTUA - Luther E. "Ted" Gertz, 83 years of age, passed away Thursday February 2, 2012 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio. Mr. Gertz was born on September 8, 1928 in Rutland, Ohio the son of the late August and Mamie (Heath) Gertz. A resident of the Mantua area the past 49 years, he had been employed as a Master Mechanic at Horvitz Construction where he retired from after 28 years of service, and while employed held membership in Operating Engineers Local 18 in Cleveland. Mr. Gertz was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. An avid gun enthusiast, "Ted" was a proud lifetime member of the NRA, as well as belonging to the Alliance Rifle Club and the Red Fox Gun Club. "Ted" was a gentleman whose vast knowledge of various topics included history, traveling and what he learned and shared with others that even included the construction of his own airplane, his love for animals and that love and care for family that will always be remembered and cherished. On August 3, 1949, he married Wanda M. Gertz who preceded him in death on November 25, 2002. Also preceding him were his siblings Fred Gertz and Oralee Grass. He is survived by his children Bill (Cheryl) Gertz of Mantua, Richard (Sandra) Gertz of Aurora and Leigh (James, Jr.) Lambert of Kent, grandchildren Nicholas Gertz and Nacole ( Phil) Cabrol, great-granddaughter Jordan Cabrol and his special friend Margie Reece of Ravenna. No calling hours. Funeral services will be Saturday February 11, 2012 3:00 P.M. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua with Full Military Honors provided by U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard Team, assisted by members of American Legion Post No. 193. A private burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Mantua. It is suggested that in lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations in his name to the Portage County APL.
