Mary R. Atkinson's Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Rita Atkinson announces her peaceful passing at the age of 79 on Monday, October 14, 2024, at her residence with family by her side. Ms. Atkinson was born on August 3, 1945, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late Walter P. and Margaret R. (Bialko) Atkinson. Mary was raised in Mantua and graduated from Crestwood High School in 1963 and enjoyed catching up with her classmates every year. She later moved to Ravenna where she remained a lifelong resident. Mary worked for many years as a medical secretary for Dr. Mastromatteo and then went on to work for the United Way until her retirement. Mary donated to many charities, and whenever possible she would provide her friends and neighbors with rides to doctor appointments or even just to the store. She enjoyed many activities from reading and playing bingo to shopping around the dollar stores and trips to the casino. The lady loved the slots!
When it came to her family Mary wore many hats. She was not only a devoted sister to Walter (Rosemary (dec)) of Kent, Thomas (dec) (Jackie) of Warren, William (Gail) of Kent, John (dec) Lorrie of Mantua, James (Diane) of Kentucky, Robert (Cindy) of Shalersville, Richard (dec) (Ellen) of Streetsboro, Stephen (Bette) of Florida, Joseph (Nancy (dec)) of Arizona, David (Beth) (both dec) of Arizona but a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews and at times when needed, a motherly figure or friend. She was always there to give advice, lend an ear to listen or be a shoulder to cry on. She cherished spending time with her family and friends and often spent her weekends traveling to visit with them.
Ms. Atkinson was involved in numerous Catholic charities and was a long-time parishioner at Immaculate Conception of Ravenna, where she served as a greeter, a traveling Eucharistic Minister and was a dedicated part of the educational program. Mary was quick-witted and loved big. Her light and laughter will be missed, but her impact will carry on in our hearts forever.
Please join us for calling hours on Thursday, October 24th, from 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Green Funeral Care in Mantua. A Catholic Mass will be held on Friday, October 25th, at 11:00 A.M. at Immaculate Conception of Ravenna (please meet at the church). Ms. Atkinson will be laid to rest at Westlawn Cemetery of Mantua Township.
In lieu of flowers please donate to Portage County Library or the National Kidney Foundation.
