Mary M. Russell's Obituary
TROY TOWNSHIPMary M. Russell, 93 years of age, a resident of Troy Township since 1941, passed away Thursday, July 16, 2009 at the Gardens of McGregor in East Cleveland, Ohio. Born on June 13, 1916 in Iron Mountain, Michigan, Mrs. Russell was the daughter of the late William G. and Mame (Dillon) Monroe. Mrs. Russell was a 1934 graduate of East High School in Cleveland, following which she attended and graduated from Western Reserve College with her degree in Elementary Education. She then taught in the Murry Hill area for three years as a kindergarten teacher. Starting in 1954, Mrs. Russell began her elementary school teaching career at the Troy elementary school, retiring after 28 years of devoted service. Mrs. Russell was active with her children in 4-H and was a former member of the Troy PTA. She was a member of the Tuesday Club in Burton and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mantua. Mrs. Russell received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Geauga County Park District and was also Senior Troy Queen at the Troy Homecoming. On July 29, 1941 she married Eldon Russell who preceded her in death in 1974. Their years of marriage included being involved with the Troy community in numerous activities and Eldon Russell Park in Troy was named in honor of Mr. Russell. Survivors include her son, Kenneth (Alice) Russell of Troy Township, daughters, Barbara (Dr. Fred) Ilfeld of Olympic Valley, California and Nan (Paul) Yancey of Naperville, Illinois, 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 4 brothers, 3 sisters and her granddaughter, Kimberly Yancey. Friends and family may call from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service, State Route 44 at the corner of Pioneer Trail (South of Route 422) Mantua on Monday, where prayer services will be Tuesday at 10:15 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mantua with Rev. Fr. Michael Garvey officiating. Mrs. Russell will be laid to rest beside her loving husband, Eldon at Troy Cemetery in Troy Township.
