Myrtle Eloise Mayfield's Obituary
MANTUA TWP. Myrtle E. Mayfield, 80 years of age, a resident of the Mantua area the past 49 years, passed away Saturday September 19, 2009 at her residence following a three and a half year fight with pancreatic cancer. Myrtle was loved by all who knew her, and both her family and friends describe her battle with cancer as courageous and amazing. Born on October 26, 1928 in Masontown, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Sadie (Nuce) Hagedorn. For over 20 years, she was employed in the cafeteria of the Crestwood School System as a cook. A member of the Mantua Center Christian Church, Myrtle was also a very active member of the American Legion Post No. 193 Auxiliary. Formerly a volunteer with the 4 C's, she and her husband together volunteered at the Woodlands and Robinson Memorial Hospital. Myrtle was a Cheerleader of the "BABES of 1916", a softball team that her husband was on and still plays for. On July 3, 1953, she married Roy R. "FooF" Mayfield who survives at their home. Also surviving are her children David (Valerie) Mayfield of Newton Falls, Karen (Ralph) Myers of Wadsworth and Pamela (Jeff) Leidy of Virginia Beach, Virginia, her sister Freda Kilpatrick of Akron, her brother Gerald Hagedorn of Akron, her grandchildren Amanda, David, Jessica, Carrie, Elizabeth and Laura and great-grandchildren Larry and Claire. Myrtle also leaves to mourn her passing, her "Card Club Family" and "Babes of 1916 Family". She was preceded in death by her brother Robert L. Hagedorn in 2000. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 5:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua. Funeral services for Myrtle will be Wednesday September 23, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at the Mantua Center Christian Church with Rev. Chad Delaney officiating. Myrtle will be laid to rest at Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township with Ralph Myers, Jeff Leidy, David Mayfield, James Blakey, Frank Novak and Charles Betoney acting as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Mantua Center Christian Church or the Hospice of RMH.
