Norman D. Alger's Obituary
MANTUA Norman D. Alger, 84 years of age, passed away Wednesday February 15, 2012 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio. Mr. Alger was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 9, 1927, the son of the late Horton B. and Helen ( Carlton ) Alger. A lifetime Mantua area resident, Mr. Alger graduated from The Ohio State University in 1952 with a degree in Animal Science and Agronomy. A veteran of World War II, he served his country in The United States Navy in the Submarine Service.His involvement in farming began in 1952, and since 1987 he was a partner in Alger Dairy Partnership with 2 of his sons. Mr. Alger held memberships in the Portage County Farm Bureau and the Milk Marketing Cooperative where for 30 years he held various leadership positions and the DHI Cooperative. In addition, he was a member of American Legion Post No. 193 and the Loyal Order of Moose in Fort Charlotte, Florida. He also was a former member of the Mantua Township Zoning Commission. Mr. Alger was an avid reader, found much pleasure in researching his family heritage, enjoyed golfing and for the past 8 years he and his wife Marilyn spent the winter months in Florida. Mr. Alger's love for family was instrumental in the development of the baseball diamond in Mantua Township known as Kathy's-Mel Harder Field which was dedicated to her grandfather former Cleveland Indians player Mel Harder. On December 20, 1952, he married Marilyn J. (Mantsch) Alger who survives at their home. Also surviving are his sons Keith (Cristina) Alger of Silver Springs, Maryland, Brian (Kathy) Alger and Randall Alger both of Mantua and Kermit (Cathy) Alger of LaGrange, Kentucky, his sister Doris Ann (Lewis) Smith of Boise, Idaho and 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father in 1977 and his mother in 2003.At his request, cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects to Mr. Alger at memorial calling hours Sunday February 19, 2012 from 3:00 P.M.-6:00 P.M. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua. A memorial service for Mr. Alger will be Saturday March 3, 2012 at the Mantua Center Christian Church at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Chad DeLaney officiating. A private family burial will be held at Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township. In lieu of floral tributes, memorials are suggested to the Mantua-Center Christian Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
