Richard A. McCollum, 77 years of age, passed away Wednesday April 17, 2019 at UH-Portage Medical Center in Ravenna, Ohio. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 5, 1941, he was the son of the late Raymond and Viola (Tucker) McCollum. Richard grew up in Hiram, and graduated from Hiram High School in 1959, where he was a star basketball player and a member of the All County Championship Team. Formerly a resident of Parma for 34 years, he had presently lived in Hiram the past 17 years where he was a member of The Hiram Christian Church. Richard had been employed as a police officer for the Warrensville Hts., Police Department from where he retired, following which he was employed as a bus driver for Parma City Schools, and then was the owner-operator of Richard’s Home Improvement. He had served with honor in the U.S. Air Force, and was a member of Melvin Shurmer Lodge No. 102 F.O.P. Richard was an avid Cleveland Browns, Indians, and Ohio State fan, and his love of sports included being a pitcher for the B.F. Goodrich Softball Team. While he enjoyed woodworking in his spare time, his most important memories will always be those created spent with family, and his special chair and blanket. On June 28, 1969, he married his beloved wife Kay-Ellen (Burgess) McCollum who survives at their home. Also surviving are his devoted children Mark (Donna) McCollum of Medina, Ohio and Stacey (John) Kacic of Saline, Michigan, and his loving grandchildren Miranda, Mikayla, Jenna, Samantha, Jacob, and Zackary. He was preceded in death by his siblings Ray, Ron and Larry McCollum, Nancy Sefchick and Phyllis Lipaj. Calling hours will be Monday April 22, 2019 at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service, 4668 Pioneer Trail at the corner of St.Rt. 44, Mantua, Ohio 44255, from 5:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M., where his funeral service will be held Tuesday April 23, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. Final resting place will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery, Twinsburg, Ohio, where full military honors will be provided by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard Team, assisted by members of Mantua American Legion Post No. 193.
