Roger L. Stroup's Obituary
NELSON-GARRETTSVILLERoger L. Stroup, 96 years of age, passed away Sunday January 10, 2010 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio. A lifetime resident of the Nelson and Garrettsville areas, Mr. Stroup was born September 15, 1913 on the family farm in Nelson Township, the son of the late Vernon E. and Jennie (Knighton) Stroup. A self employed farmer, Mr. Stroup operated the farm that his father established, and is still being operated by the third generation of the Stroup family today. He was a graduate of Hiram College, a member of the Farm Bureau and a longtime active member of the Nelson United Methodist Church. In recent years, he found great pleasure in sending cards and special notes to family and friends, especially to those less fortunate and who could not get out, or were suffering from illnesses. On June 24, 1939, he married Alma Stroup, who preceded him in death in 1988. Also preceding him in death was his son Lawrence Stroup in 1957 and one great-great-granddaughter Selah Cleveland. Survivors include his son Robert (Liz) Stroup of New York, N.Y., two daughters Janet (Gail) Nichols of Nelson and Ann (Don) Pike of Lakeland, Florida, as well as 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday January 14, 2010 at the Nelson United Methodist Church at 12:00 Noon, where calling hours will be held from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the services. Officiating will be Rev. Rick Hughes. Mr. Stroup will be laid to rest beside his wife at Harrington Cemetery in Nelson Township. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Nelson United Methodist Church P.O.Box 210 Garrettsville, OH. Arrangements are by the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua.
