Roy N. Brugmann's Obituary
MANTUARoy N. Brugmann, 80 years of age, passed away Friday October 28, 2011 at his residence with his loving and devoted family by his side. Born in Shalersville Township on May 16, 1931, he was the son of Oscar and Annie (Paserk) Brugmann, Sr. A lifetime resident of the Mantua and Shalersville areas, Roy began his career in the sand and gravel business as a young boy, following in the footsteps of his parents in the operation of Oscar Brugmann Sand & Gravel, Inc. where he learned hands on the entire operation, and following the death of his father in 1975, became President of the company and assumed the leadership using the principles taught to him by his parents. Through his life Roy developed a true appreciation of the land we all live on, purchasing land not only for business purposes, but just as importantly to foster the ideals of conservation, which eventually included the construction of his present family residence on Brugmann farm land. A humble man, Roy had a way with words, never leaving anyone to doubt what he meant by what he said. His unspoken generosity can never be denied, and his involvement in his community and county was represented by his association with the Portage County 4-H Beef Committee, Portage County Bee Keepers Association, Ohio Aggregate Association, Robinson Memorial Foundation, numerous sponsorships of youth baseball teams, a supporter of St. Joseph's Church and the many times that his family operated business donated paving materials for area roads. Roy had a deep respect for those in life who worked hard and were honest in business dealings, as well as a mutual respect for the many Amish work crews that he came in contact with. Roy loved farming, auctions and especially Kiko Farm Auctions and the raising of Black Angus Beef Cattle. His genuine concern for other people, putting them ahead of himself, and a love of birds and animals has become an inspiration to his family , a legacy that they will always have to pass on to their future generations. On November 27, 1954, Roy married his devoted wife Loretta Jo (Zalewski) Brugmann who survives at their home. Also surviving are his loving children Debbi Jo Bailey, Alan (Wendy) Brugmann and Shannon Jo (Rich) Bretz all of Mantua, Lori Jo (Joe) Duriak and Todd (Cheryl) Brugmann both of Shalersville and Darren Brugmann of Snohomish, Washington, his caring mother Annie "Sally" Brugmann of Mantua, brother Oscar "Sonny" (Gail) Brugmann, Jr. of Shalersville, sisters Olga (Don) Van Auken of Shalersville and Joan Martin of Mantua, grandchildren Chad Bailey, Mallory Jo Duriak, Carly Jo Duriak, Isabelle Brugmann, Jade Bretz, Slate Bretz, Jynx Bretz and Roxxy Bretz and great-grandchildren Jo Marie Bailey and Owen Oscar Bailey. Roy was preceded in death by his father Oscar Brugmann, Sr. in 1975 and two brothers Harry and Richard Brugmann. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 11045 St. Joseph's Blvd., Mantua, Ohio.
