Susan Lynn Hurd's Obituary
Susan Lynn (House) Hurd, age 69 of Hiram OH, passed away on Friday, January 24 with her family by her side after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Sue was born at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base hospital in Fairborn OH on January 8, 1956, to Philip A. House and Jean (Evans) House. She grew up in the Dayton suburb of Kettering and graduated from Kettering East High School in 1974. Sue earned her BA in Psychology from The Ohio State University and an MS in Mental Health Counseling from Wright State University. She began her career as a drug and alcohol counselor and eventually managed the inpatient chemical dependency treatment programs at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton and Middletown Regional Hospital. While raising her family, she held several different jobs, most notably as manager of Auburn Twin Oaks Winery in Chagrin Falls. She retired from Allstate in 2021.
Sue was entirely devoted to her children, Philip and Allison. She actively supported all their activities, serving as president of the Middle School PTO and the CHS Band Patrons, announcer and chaperone for the Crestwood Scarlet Guard, and volunteered as a “Drama Mama” for the Crestwood HS Drama Club.
In addition, Sue was a long-time member of Mantua Center Christian Church, where she served as an Elder and Church Secretary. She was also a loving and dedicated caregiver to her mother and brother in their later years.
Sue was a Crazy Cat Lady long before it was fashionable. She loved and adopted all kinds of pets, volunteered her time at animal shelters, and fostered cats for the APL. Sue’s caring and kind spirit - not to mention her quiet and wry sense of humor - will be profoundly missed by her family and friends.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents and brother Jeff. She is survived by her husband Steve - they would have celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on January 26. Also surviving at home is Philip Hurd and Allison Bozeka (Jon) of Akron. She also leaves behind her faithful four-legged family members, Gracie and Noodle.
Calling hours will be held at Green Funeral Care, 4668 Pioneer Trail, Mantua, on Saturday, February 8 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Honoring her wishes, Sue will be cremated, and a private family graveside service will be held at a future date at Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sue’s memory may be made to Mantua Center Christian Church, PO Box 550, Mantua Ohio 44255. Adopting a stray pet would also be a fitting memorial to Sue.
