Vondell Donnie Nelson, age 62, of Aurora, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 21, 2026. Born on October 25, 1963, in Cleveland, Ohio, Vondell was the cherished son of the late Vondell and Dixie (Richards) Nelson.
He was the beloved husband of the late Lisa Nelson and loving father to Anthony and Kevin Nelson. Adored grandfather of Jenna and Kaden Nelson. Dear brother of Toni (Robert) Francis, Janice Babcock and the late Ricky Dale Nelson. Son-in-law of Irene (Maynard) Henderson and the late Rex Henderson. Brother-in-law of Vickie Sue Johnson and Gary Henderson. Uncle of Erik Francis, Daylen Johnson, Dominick Henderson and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
After graduating from high school, Vondell proudly served his country by joining the U.S. Army. His time in the service instilled in him a sense of discipline that he carried throughout his life. Upon returning to civilian life, Vondell found his calling in the outdoors, working as a landscaper. His love for nature was evident in the meticulous care he took in nurturing the environment around him. Vondell also spent time working at Mr. Coffee. His work ethic and gentle personality was well respected in the workplace.
A dedicated member of the Aurora VFW, Vondell was deeply committed to his fellow veterans. He found joy in giving back to the community that had supported him, and his involvement with the VFW was a testament to his enduring spirit of service.
Above all, Vondell cherished the time spent with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.
His presence was a source of comfort and joy. Vondell's legacy is one of kindness, friendship, and love. His gentle approach to life, his unwavering friendliness, and his ability to see the good in others will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life in honor of Vondell will be held at a later date.
