Wally Ellenberger's Obituary
HIRAMWally Ellenberger, 81 years of age, passed away Sunday September 2, 2012 at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center in Claridon Township, Ohio surrounded by his loving family. Wally was born on February 6, 1931 on the family farm in Hiram Township, the son of the late Kenneth W. and Alta M. (Rood) Ellenberger. A lifetime resident, Wally was a gifted auto mechanic who shared his abilities and knowledge with family and friends all of his life. Having been baptized in 1959 into the Hiram Christian Church, he remained a lifetime member. From 1958-1988, Wally proudly served as Hiram Fire Chief. Also, for many years he was the Superintendant of Utilities for Hiram. His commitment to the entire Hiram community will always be remembered, as Wally for years "Put Hiram to bed" each night. Wally was a U.S. Army Veteran having served his country during the Korean Conflict. A man who had a special " Way with Words", Wally leaves a legacy of determination, honesty and love for both his community and family. On November 26, 1949, he married Phyllis (Simpson) Ellenberger who survives at their home. Also surviving are his five daughters Phyllis (Ron) Mullett of Leavittsburg, Jennifer (James) Flower of Aurora, Leta (Don) VanMetre and Beverly (Brian) Brown both of Garrettsville and Connie (Randall Durant) Ruffing of Champion, his brothers Stanley Ellenberger and Ronald (Joanne) Ellenberger both of Hiram and Roger ( Mary Ann) Ellenberger of Brookpark,Ohio. Wally was "Grampa" to David and Ryan Mullett, Matthew, Carrie and Kate Berta, Leta and Laura VanMetre and Jacob and Abbie Brown and "Great-Grampa to 7. Also surviving is his loyal companion Sammy. No calling hours. A graveside funeral service for Wally will be held Wednesday September 5, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at Fairview Cemetery in Hiram where he will then be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to the Hiram Fire Department. Arrangements are by the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua.
