William M. Kernig's Obituary
GARRETTSVILLEWilliam Milford Kernig, 80 years of age, passed away Sunday December 27, 2015 at University Hospital-Portage Medical Center in Ravenna, Ohio. Born in Buffalo, New York on August 5, 1935, he was the son of the late William G. and Helen (Skrok) Kernig.Formerly of Ravenna; he had resided in Garrettsville since 1983. Mr. Kernig grew up in Archbold, Ohio where his love of all sports became well known, including playing on the first football team at Archbold High School, and scoring their first touchdown. A graduate of Archbold High School in 1954, he later attended Kent State University and earned his Bachelor of Science in 1969. Starting in 1962, he was employed at Chrysler Stamping in Twinsburg as a medal finisher, retiring in 1995. Mr. Kernig proudly served his country, and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.A gentleman whose life was surrounded by sporting activities such as golfing, fishing and all sports, he shared his passion for sports both with his children and grandchildren, always supporting their sporting events, being there to encourage them in all ways possible. He also enjoyed bird watching, playing chess, especially with his son Bill, and had a keen knowledge of math and how to apply it in solving problems. On September 16, 1956, he married Laura J. (Gearig) Kernig who survives at their home. Also surviving are his children William D. (Mikelle) Kernig of San Antonia, Texas, Mark A. (Sharon) Kernig of Garrettsville and Debra (Tim) Shaffer of Diamond, Ohio his sisters Joan (Jay) Woodward of Defiance, Ohio, and Nancy Edwards, Elaine (Russ) Pickering and Loretta Downing all of Bryan, Ohio, and his 5 cherished granddaughters. No calling hours or services. Cremation has been held. Arrangements are by the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua.
