Ethelyn Fitzsimmons' Obituary
Ethelyn Fitzsimmons May 17, 1915 – January 24, 2026.
Ethelyn, was raised by her mother Lucille Boothby and her stepfather, Clyde, whom she adored. She graduated from Marietta college and is the oldest alumni. After graduating, Ethelyn moved to Mantua and married her husband John Paul “Bud” whom she always referred to as a real character. Community was important to her. She was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s church. Ethelyn was often seen in her tailored-made suit with a matching hat with a brooch, tiny heel and all, enjoying a meal at Jake’s, her favorite restaurant, and mingling with the townspeople. She also enjoyed stopping by Restoration 44. At age 106, Ethelyn was Grand Marshall in Mantua. She elegantly waved to the crowd while asking photographers to back up so her wrinkles wouldn’t show. Her days were spent giving piano lessons, writing music and poetry, knitting, needle point, painting, gardening, German club, and exercising at Advanced Rehab with Edie into her 90’s. In her younger years she danced on her toes and took part in minstrel shows, where her husband performed tap. Ethelyn was the secretary to Kent State University from 1953 to 1971, working for three university presidents: George Bowman, Robert white, and Glenn Olds. Her secret to living to 110? Enjoy the small things and do something you love every day. She was a true legend. Soar freely, my friend, with your beautiful wings, till we meet again.
Graveside Service on Thursday February 5, 2026 at 12 Noon at Hillside Cemetery in Mantua Village.
