Merle was such an incredible figure and leader in the town of Cohasset. As a young child and teenager growing up in Cohasset, I was a member of Troop 28 and attended The Appalachian Service Project twice. During my time with the Scouts, Merle was always heavily involved in the planning and operations for the troop. I went on countless RTF runs with Merle, transferring bottles and cans from the Cohasset RTF station to the Weymouth unloading station. We often stopped for a Donut at the Dunkin Donuts next door and talked about merit badge advancement, times I truly cherished as a young Scout. Additionally, Merle was a group leader during my first year at ASP and took me under his wing, teaching me new skills while installing PCV plumbing systems on a home and repairing underpinning. His dry wit and humor is what I remember most fondly as he continually joked with me while I performed less than glamorous work underweath a home. Merle took pride in the unglamorous work that made operations run smoothly for organizations such as Troop 28 and ASP. His dedication to meaningful causes around him was truly remarkable. Merle was always working tirelessly behind the scenes to help support his community and his selfless personality was felt long into his life. He will be deeply missed by his community and family and I am incredibly grateful to have spent time learning from him and helping serve our community together.
