Merle S. Brown's Obituary
Merle S. Brown, known as Doc, Brownie, and simply Merle, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, leaving behind a legacy like no other.
A lifelong resident of the Beechwood neighborhood of Cohasset, Massachusetts, Merle spent every day of his life with drive and focus to support the people and the land that he called home.
As a young man, Merle joined the Navy, determined to serve his country. That same young man discovered that he did not have his sea legs, and he transferred to the Army where seasickness was less likely, serving in Germany during the Korean War. It was during this time that he developed his strict self-discipline and routines, which he carried into his career as an engineer for the next 25 years at both D.S. Kennedy in Cohasset and then at Jet Spray Corp. in Norwood.
Merle did not slow down in retirement. He was stalwart in his work towards the preservation of the land he loved to call home, working with the Conservation Commission and the South Shore Recycling Committee or being a Selectman for 12 years. He mentored young people with the Boy Scouts and the Cohasset branch of the Appalachian Service Project, instilling in them the life skills and respect for their fellow man that characterized his own daily life. He could tease and nudge in such a way that you didn't notice you were learning until you went away with a new skill and a ruffle in your hair. He also spent over 30 years volunteering for the Pan Mass Challenge with his wife.
While Merle was a man of many hats, perhaps his favorites were those he wore for his family. The youngest of three children born to E. Harold and Gertrude Brown, Merle was a brother to Herbert, who is no longer with us, and Dorothea. To Joanie, his beloved wife of 58 years, he was a loving husband, and he rejoins her now in his passing. To their children, Marcy and Jeff, he was the very best father, and they, alongside their own devoted spouses, Don and Laurie, supported him when he needed their help just as he cared for them growing up. To his grandchildren, Christian, Elizabeth, Kathleen, Audrey, and Madeleine, he was Bapa, Buppa, and Boppa, spelling dependent on his mood, of course. He was a handyman, builder, scout leader, Selectman, committee member, friend, neighbor, gym buddy, and simply a good man.
He is remembered not only for what he did for others, but for how he acted in the working. While dry wit and teasing sarcasm were to be expected, Merle did not hesitate to get his hands dirty, squinting into the sun with a grin, brushing shoulders with loved ones and strangers alike. He was there with a poke and a smile, letting you know that you were wrong and he was right, but he was there to help.
As all things Merle did, his life can truly be called a job well done. We will have a Celebration of Life for Merle on Saturday, July 25th, 2026 at the Beechwood Meetinghouse and Museum, 51 Church St, Cohasset, MA 02025, at 3 pm to share stories and remember Merle. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Boy Scout Troop 28 of Cohasset.
